The .45-70 is one of our oldest centerfire rifle cartrid.

In duplicating the cavalry 45/55/405 load for the H&Rs, I've found Tightgroup powder to be the most uniform powder for both ballistic uniformity and accuracy. To duplicate the 45/70/405 infantry load I like slower powders like 4759 and 4198.6,068. 13.0 of Red Dot ("the load") gets 1120 fps with the Lee 405 FN in my 22 inch Microgroove Marlin. When their hollowbase version of the same weight is substituted, the deeper seating in the case picks up more velocity, to 1250 fps, just like you'd expect with fast powder and reduced powder space. Mainly I wanted to get used to the rifle with this first go around.Is anyone using Trapdoor load data for 45-70 using IMR4198 in their Marlin 1895? I cast Lee 457-340-F bullets and used 35 grains of IMR4198. Was getting incosistent ignition and had a bullet get stuck in the barrel. This was with my first 5 loads. After this I gave the next 5 loads a heavier crimp and made sure the powder was against the primer.45-70 with 2400. Was looking thru the Complete Reloading manual for 45-70 last night and noticed a load that used 2400. I shoot a Handi-rifle and a 74 Sharps and have been having trouble getting a clean burning powder. Both 4198 and 5744 seem to leave unburnt powder in the cases or chamber. Hullo Troy, No. You might want to look at IMR-3031 , IMR 4198 and RL-7, these are used a lot in the 45/70 and the load manuals are full of these loads.The old .45-70 "prison-guard" load with round ball was 40 grains of FFFg black powder, a felt wad and three (!) .457 round balls. If you vary the charge a little bit, the top ball is in perfect position to crimp, slightly more than half way into the case.The .45-70 was originally named the .45-70-500 Government. This meant it was a .45cal bullet (.458"), 70gr of black powder under a 500gr hardcast lead round nose bullet. If it worked 125+ years ago, it'll work today, too. And yes, you can compress the charge that much. The more the better with black powder...just do NOT slam the bullet home. A little too slow in my experience Cartridge :
