In duplicating the cavalry 45/55/405 load for the H&Rs, I've found Tightgroup powder to be the most uniform powder for both ballistic uniformity and accuracy. To duplicate the 45/70/405 infantry load I like slower powders like 4759 and 4198.6,068. 13.0 of Red Dot ("the load") gets 1120 fps with the Lee 405 FN in my 22 inch Microgroove Marlin. When their hollowbase version of the same weight is substituted, the deeper seating in the case picks up more velocity, to 1250 fps, just like you'd expect with fast powder and reduced powder space. I have found that IMR or H-4198 & 2400 gave me the velocity (1200 to1400 fps) & accuracy needed for anything within the range of uses the cartridge has whether hunting or target work. I would avoid light bullets & high velocity with the 45-70.However, I got alot of unburned powder at 52 grains of H-322. Someone told me that H-322 works best with heavier bullets in the 45/70, so I now use IMR 4198 for the 300 grain and 322 for the 405 grain bullet.
